Air travel has made long trips much easier, and the introduction of pet passports has increased the travel opportunities for our dogs. Some rigid dog carriers are approved for air travel but it is essential that you check the regulations of the airline that you are travelling with, especially size restrictions for the dog carrier.
There are two types of dog carriers approved for air travel. The first is a carry on carrier that fits under an airplane seat. This will allow you to keep an eye on your dog during the flight, but needs to have a waterproof bottom for obvious reasons.
The second type is the cargo carrier which will be used if your dog is large or regulations require dogs to travel alone in the cargo hold section of the plane. A spacious carrier will increase the comfort of your dog and the carrier should be made of plastic, have a secure locking system, refillable water bowls and plenty of ventilation. The carrier should not have wheels! Other types of dog carrier are available for general use in cars.
