Dog Leads

A dog lead or leash is used as a training tool and to maintain control of your dog. This control will ensure the safety of your dog and also the safety of other dogs. Walking your dog on a lead will ensure that your dog does not upset other people, chase other animals or run the risk of being involved in a traffic accident. Remember that it is important for dogs to go for proper walks and not just play in the garden or park, as it helps them to stay stimulated and mentally balanced.

Types of Dog Lead & Leashes

Leads are available in a variety of lengths, materials and colours. Length is an important factor for the dog’s comfort as well as yours. It is imperative to have the correct amount of control without restricting the dog too much.
There are several different types of lead available, and your choice will depend on the characteristics of your dog as well as the purpose for the lead use.

Metal chain leads can be the solution for a dog that chews their lead. Nylon leads are lightweight and flexible and will be easy to clean. Leather leads will last for a long time, and whilst they are strong they will not cut into your hand. Bungee leads are made from material that absorbs shock and will be kinder on your arm if your dog has a habit of pulling. Slip leads are used for times when you wish to put the lead on and off frequently, for example when training an agility dog or working a dog. Short leads can be used for some competitions in order to maintain a high level of control.

Training leads can come in a length of 4 to 6 feet, which is ideal for training a dog to walk to heel. The training lead is also available in a length of 12 – 30 feet, which is best for training distance commands such as the long drop or long sit used for working breeds such as pointers and setters. Retractable or extension leads allow you to walk the dog at different lengths of lead, resulting in variable degree of freedom and control. Two handled leads have a second handle close to the dog collar which will give you more control when it is needed. Kennel leads are short leads that are used to move dogs around a kennels or vets without needing to use a collar.
