Hamsters and gerbils are popular pets, and it is both easy and important to provide them with an ideal home. The main difference between keeping hamsters and gerbils is that hamsters should live on their own, whilst gerbils prefer to live together. Gerbils of the same sex from the same litter will get along well but it is best to introduce adults to other gerbils very carefully as they can fight. Keep in mind that the housing will need to be large enough for the number of gerbils that you are keeping. Gerbils will play and nap throughout the day, and love to dig. Hamsters are very active, but are nocturnal and so will sleep throughout the day.
The hamster or gerbil housing you have will need to be kept indoors, and must be away from draughts, direct sunlight or heaters. It is best to keep the housing in a quiet area so that the hamster or gerbil is not too disturbed. It may also be a good idea to keep it in an area that will not disturb you, as your little pet will be active whilst you are trying to sleep.
The hamster or gerbil housing will need to contain a feeding bowl, which should be heavy in order to prevent it from tipping over. Most available feeding bowls are ceramic. Your hamster or gerbil will need to be fed a good diet consisting of a muesli mix and hay with occasional fruit and vegetable treats. Take care not to overfeed, as the extra food will be stored in the bedding. Drinking bottles that attach to the cage are the best way to provide a constant supply of clean water. It is important to change the water regularly in order to keep it fresh.
The housing will need to be cleaned and the bedding changed at least once a week. Lots of fresh bedding will allow the hamster or gerbil to keep warm and to burrow. A nesting house can be provided for them to sleep in, and this should be made out of wood or a non chewable material. Hamsters and gerbils have teeth that are constantly growing, and so they will chew things. It is a good idea to provide them with chewable toys.
Toys and a running wheel can be included in the hamster or gerbil housing in order to keep them happy and occupied. The wheel should be solid so that their tails cannot be caught in between the slots. Wheels and toys will also encourage your pet to exercise. It is a good idea to provide props for climbing, such as ladders, ramps or pieces of wood. Tubing and platforms will encourage the hamster or gerbil to explore, and occasionally rearranging the cage will keep them exploring.
Cages
The standard housing for hamsters and gerbils is a cage with a plastic base and a strong wire coated top that clips into the base. These cages are easy to wipe clean, and usually have a front door for easy access. Cages are also available that have an extra deep plastic tray. This is ideal for burrowing as the bedding will not spill out of the cage. The upper level of the cage is used as a feeding and general living area. Some cages have external tubing attached in order to encourage exploration and exercise. Another version of the cage is one with a glass tank bottom and a wire top. This allows for a good view of your pet burrowing.
