It is important to keep your small animal in hygienic conditions. This will ensure that it leads a comfortable life and enjoys good health. By using the correct hygiene products you ensure that your pet’s cage or hutch is kept clean and free from odours.
All cages and hutches should be completely cleaned out once a week, or more often if necessary. Soiled litter or bedding should be removed from the cage daily as this will not only help to maintain a healthy environment but will allow you to monitor your pet’s droppings. Changes in their droppings may be an indication that your animal is unwell, and you will miss these changes if the droppings are not being cleaned out regularly.
Litter Products
The bedding and litter used for small animal housing will help to keep their environment fresh and clean.
Wood litter is a biodegradable type of litter. The dust has been extracted from the wood litter to ensure that it is safe for your pet and will not cause respiratory problems. It is absorbent and will keep the bedding dry and the cage smelling fresh. Wood litter is also digestible, and so will not harm your pet if it accidentally eats some of the litter.
Wood pulp fibre bedding is biodegradable and therefore friendly to the environment. As with wood litter, it is dust free. The wood pulp fibre is very absorbent and it can be used in a smaller quantity than expected whilst still being effective.
Straw pellet litter is biodegradable and environmentally friendly and it can be flushed down the toilet when soiled. The straw pellet litter is dust free and kind on small animals. When the pellets become wet they separate from the dry pellets and so can be cleaned out very easily.
Paper bedding is made from strips of paper, and is available in different colours. This bedding is biodegradable.
Material strip bedding is made from an absorbent material such as j-cloth. The material has been shredded and this provides a bedding that is both absorbent and warm.
Burrowing material can be included in the bedding of small animals that like to dig. The material will encourage burrowing and nesting behaviour. The burrowing material contains coconut fibres and crinkle paper.
Odour tamers are carbon cage liners that help to reduce the smell of small animal housing. The odour tamers are available in different sizes and are disposable.
It is possible to toilet train many small animals. Toilet training involves placing a litter tray or container where your animal usually goes to the toilet. Place some dirty litter into the tray or container to encourage your pet to use this as a toilet. Your pet should soon learn to go to the toilet in this same place and cleaning will be easier for you.
Hamster toilets are small plastic containers which will hold hamster litter.
Litter trays can be used for rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets. These trays can be attached to wire cages or stand alone in the housing.
Litter scoops are plastic scoops that can be used to sift through the litter and clean it out by removing the soiled sections.
